100 Wells Health - East Africa / Southeast Asia
Would you drink this water?
OVERVIEW: This project aims to assist targeted groups in less developed countires with water, sanitation and hygiene issues through capacity training, well construction and implementing community based projects.
TAX DEDUCTIBLE: YES
WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT IT: Providing safe drinking water is only half the story. WatSan - Water and Sanitation Education is a major piece in the jigsaw puzzle for developing communities. 100 Wells, will not only teach Africans how to identify the best sites and build wells, but we will also train locals in how to take care of their personal hygiene and health. Health will improve and life expectancy will increase due to less water-borne disease and dehydration due to dysentery.
BUDGET: This project is expected to run for three years and the first year budget is $35,000 which is required for drilling equipment and provision of training.
1. THE NEED: Sadly many families around the world gather their drinking water from muddy stagnant ponds like the little boy in the photo. This results in sickness and often an early death for so many. Several partner organisations have come together to undertake this huge task. "I want to help build 100 wells before I die," is the goal of one of these partners, who has a chronic heart condition and an uncertain future. We have put together an experienced Well Driller and Educator, a Ugandan Aid Agency working with children at risk, a Geelong Church and several other partnerships in Africa, Asia and East Timor to enable "100 Wells" to become a reality. Not only will 100 Wells be built, but we will train 100 people showing them how to build wells and understand the importance of good water and sanitation practice. Work has already begun and two wells have already been delivered and people trained! We estimate it will take at least 3 years to build these 100 Wells and train 100 people.
2. HOW DOES THE PROJECT ACHIEVE THIS?
- 100 participants in small teams from CBO's (Community Based Orgs.) in East Africa and Sth East Asia will be identified and taught how to source material, build a rig & drill for water, as well as receive vital Water & Sanitation training.
- These 100 leaders oversee/ influence the building of 100 wells (major goal) in a 3 year period, providing safe drinking water for needy communities. (This reasonably equates to 15 participants and 15 wells a year over the three year period.) These trained people are then in a position to build a further 2 - 3 wells each - thus giving a total of 100 wells.
- Delivered by Christians in partnership with Churches, "100 Wells" demonstrates Jesus instruction that we take care of the poor and marginalised.
3. IMPACT:
- Africans will be provided an education in Water and Sanitation issues, and also have safe drinking water.
- Health will improve and life expectancy will increase due to less water-borne disease and de-hydration due to dysentery.
- Empowerment of locals to initiate their own training in Water and Sanitation issues.
- In some cases the water may provide them with an income through water kiosks.
