Pre-School & Anti Child Trafficking - Cambodia - Second Year Funding
Children at Risk / Evangelism

OVERVIEW:
As a border town between Cambodia and Thailand, many risk factors present themselves to the people of the Poipet community on a daily basis. One extreme risk for parents is that their children might be taken away and trafficked into Thailand for slave labour, prostitution, drug smuggling and other horrible crime circuits. We aim to lower the risk of this happening by providing a safe learning environment for children to stay while their parents are working.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE: No

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT IT:
Cambodian Hope Organisation (CHO) is a grass-roots organisation that conducts many key programs along the Cambodian/Thai boarder. With a proven track record and a heart to help, we have seen the high quality of the people and their work. School on the Mat, Microenterprise, community safe houses, AIDS clinic and a church all contribute to helping develop this neglected area of Cambodia.

BUDGET:
Using existing Government facilities, the cost for establishing PreSchool Education Centers is AUD$22,000 a year.  This is the second preschool of its kinds funded through Entrust foundation and partners .

1. THE NEED FOR THE Education Centers:
An estimated 80% of children trafficked from Cambodia, pass through the main street of Poipet en -route to their destination! This place is the gateway to Thailand and is a strategic center - in spite of its lack of infrastructure and muddy road. Teaching the children about the dangers they each face is an important strategy for combating this evil trade in human lives.

2. HOW DOES THE CENTER ACHIEVE THIS?

  • To lower the risk of Child trafficking and Child Labour in Poipet by encouraging parents to send their children to Preschool rather then letting them stay at home alone, or go to work with them in Thailand. To educate these children in the foundations of learning.
  • To offer a free Preschool centre for the community of Poipet so they can send their children aged 5-8 years to the Preschool and not place them in situations of risk.

3. IMPACT:

  • To lower the rate of Child Trafficking and Labour by reducing the amount of children at home alone, or being left unsupervised in Thailand while their parents work as day-labourers.
  • To provide basic education to the children to bridge the gap into their primary education.
  • Children gain a pre-school education.
  • The parents of these children will know their children are safe from Human Traffickers while they are away working, allowing them to earn an income to support the family.
