Overview

Yayasan Kaganangan Banua (YKB) has been functioning for over 4 years in South Kalimantan. Through strong relationships with the local government, they have seen drinking water projects become an integral part of the local solution in rural areas. YKB has the privilege of wide spread support and are looking to scale up and expand projects to have a wider footprint and influence across the thousands of villages in the state. They wish to finish developing sanitation solutions and introduce more practical medical assistance to local mothers and children under 5 to complement current public health education training.

Why support this

With an established and trusted presence in the community, YKB is in a natural position to expand and turn 3 years of sanitation research and experience into several small pilot projects. The expansion of the health program is also beginning to take shape. Most clinics in the rural areas are staffed by a doctor, 2 nurses and 3 midwives, servicing 5-6 villages (6000+ people). They are working on bringing in expat medical professionals who, in partnership with the local government, can support and train up the workers in the local clinics. Now is the time for them to leverage the initial heavy investment into language acquisition, cultural adaptation and local relationships to bring the primary goals of YKB (water, sanitation and public health) into full fruition.

Budget

The funds will be used to further develop the sanitation and health programs of YKB and additional costs associated with scaling up the non-profit to have a larger reach for its drinking water program. This includes liaising with local governments to take on a larger portion of the infrastructure costs themselves.

Objectives Include

Next to India, Indonesia is second in the world to open sewage (66+ million).
The rivers are severely polluted with sewage so YKB provide knowledge and experience to create locally viable solutions with the community leaders.
They are the first non-profit in the area to focus on water and sanitation, they are in a unique situation to grow their influence while equipping communities with local solutions.
With the appropriate funding, this is a possibility.

Expected Life Change

Expat medical professionals onsite will have an immediate impact in training up locals and understanding the reality of the situation through research.
A greater focus on sanitation will increase the reduction of water-borne disease in conjunction with the drinking water program.
Doing these programs with the local governments and villages keeps the solutions in their own hands and therefore maintains local ownership. This is essential to development.
